Did You Know...

There are so many wonderful things about living in Kansas...but there is one thing in particular that I know my children LOVE about Olathe...it is windy!  Perfect hair-blowin, twirl-aroundin, kite-flyin wind.  And thanks to Aunt Jenny and Uncle Chris, kite flyin is just what we did...and it was FUN!

Family "Scripture" Study

So tonight, family scripture study went a little something like this:

  • Mom: "And it came to pass..."
  • Riley and Tanner: AARRGGGHHHHH...Tanner, stop it...Riley, leave me alone...AARRGGGGHHHH!
  • Mom: "...that the pioneers were cast out of their homes and sent to live with the leperachauns on top of the rainbow.
  • Riley and Tanner:  RRROOOAAARRRR!!!
  • Mom: "And a kind little leperachaun left them a little gift of candy and gold in their new homes...Amen"  Okay, time for prayer.
  • Riley and Tanner...with one last push...kneel down as if everytyhing I said made perfect and utter sense.
Some days are just like this...sigh.

The Joys of Childhood

I have a lot of happy memories from the days of yore. One of my favorites is of going to the park just up the street from our house on 9th South in Salt Lake City. You see, there was this tree...and it was very special. It was the perfect climbing tree, and climb I did! I would climb with my sisters. I would climb with my friends. I would climb alone. I'd sit for hours...or what seemed like hours, though it was probably more like 2.56 minutes...and I'd watch cars drive by, and watch people walk by, and watch other children play in the park and just sit...and let my imagination run wild.  Oh, how I loved that tree.

Now I am grown and no longer climb trees (too much sap for my taste!), but I have a son who is a lot like me. I also have a park down the street from my house, and in this park there is a tree...and it is special.

A Child's Dream

Do you remember the dreams you had as a child? Not sleepy, bed-time dreams, but real, honest-to-goodness, I'm gonna be that/do that someday dreams. Well, Tanner has a dream. A great dream actually. A dream he thinks about on a daily basis.

The other day we dropped Riley off at school and Tanner saw one of the 5th graders out with his florescent yellow vest and stop sign and in pure wonder and awe said, "Mom, is that a stop sign boy? Wow...can I be a stop sign boy one day?" I'm not one to crush my children's deepest desires, so of course I answered in the affirmative. Sure buddy. I know that one day you will be the bestest stop sign boy there ever was.
